Backpacking Zabljak
Zabljak is the largest town within the Durmitor Mountains of northern Montenegro. Zabljak itself is at the highest altitude of all towns in the Balkans at nearly 1,500 m above sea level. It is a small town of only a few thousand people. The town of Zabljak is the place to stay if you are looking at exploring the Durmitor National Park and are keen to try some of the outdoor activities on offer in the region. Zabljak can also be visited during the winter if you are interesting on trying some skiing or snowboarding.

Sights and Highlights
Hiking
Zabljak is in a great location if you would like to go hiking through the surrounding area. Many hikes and trails start from very close to the town itself. The summit of the highest mountain in Montenegro, Bobotov Kuk, is a 5 hour hike from the town. A lot of good information on hiking the region can be found at summitpost.org/bobotov-kuk/
Rafting
The second deepest canyon in the world and the deepest in Europe is located on the Tara River in Montenegro and close to Zabljak. There are several tour agencies in town that can organise half or full day rafting tours. A lot of people come to Zabljak specifically for the rafting that is available here. For Drinking
Local Drinks
Quality Montenegrin wine is held in very high regard. The best known Montenegrin wines are Vranac, Pro Corde, Krstač, Cabernet, Chardonnay and the famous home made Crmničko red wine. Grape brandy (rakija) is also great. Ask around this small town for the best place to go to try some local produce.
Transport
Local
Zabljak is very small and is easily explored by foot. A lot of the hiking trailheads are walking distance from the town or can be reached with a short taxi ride. The hostel has all the information you need to find your way to the trails.
Getting In and Out
Zabljak is best connected to the Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. The trip will take around 2-3 hours depending on the time of the day. From Podgorica is easy to catch connecting buses to Kotor, Kosovo or Albania. For a list of bus departure times, visit balkanviator.com.
